Recommended cms (Content Management Systems)

There are many great open source tools you can install to run your website. They are free, and you can get help from other developers to keep your site up-to-date and secure.

There are three big things to consider before choosing a system for your website...

  • What do you want your visitors to be able to do?
Will they be reading your travel entries and stories (Blog or Journal) or also creating their own (Portal)? Do you want to create a complete community, and if so, what can it offer that doesn't already exist on the Web? Choose a system that fits the needs of your visitors and allows you to 'plug in' new features easily.

  • How will you be accessing your website most?
If you will be updating your website while traveling, you need a management system that makes it easy to make changes or add updates without using FTP. In other words, a simple editor interface.

  • How much time do you want to use maintaining the website?
Some CMS software is always changing and requires a lot of upkeep to make sure it is running secure and smooth. If you do not have the time or experience needed to maintain a diverse site, choose a content system that has been around a long time, is relatively small, and is known to be stable/ secure.
